HOW TO READ AN ATELIER BRUNETTE SEWING PATTERN?

DECIPHERING YOUR PATTERN BEFORE GETTING THE SCISSORS OUT

A sewing pattern can be intimidating at first glance: lines, symbols, dotted lines, numbers. Once you have the codes in hand, understanding a sewing pattern becomes easy and clear.

WHAT IS A SEWING PATTERN?

A sewing pattern is the template for each piece of a garment or accessory to be cut out for machine sewing. It always consists of two inseparable elements: the pattern pieces themselves (the shapes to be traced onto the fabric) and a guide, or instruction booklet, that explains how to assemble them.

A pattern can be in paper format (A0 sheets containing the various pattern pieces) or in PDF format (a digital file to be printed at home or by a professional printer, then assembled).

In both cases, it follows the same reading codes.

For Paper Patterns, each size is visible on the sheets; you can trace or cut your size directly from the sheet according to the indications specified in the legend.
  • Seam allowances included, integrated directly into each piece. They are 1cm, (unless otherwise indicated).
  • Bilingual French / English pattern, on both the instructions and the pieces.
  • A sewing level indicated from 1 to 5, from beginner to advanced level to choose a project suited to your skill (challenge yourself and choose a model you like, even if the level is higher than yours; with patience and our guidance, you will succeed! We created the Atelier to help you master sewing techniques by practicing on study pieces that you will find within our sewing patterns.
  • A complete booklet: required supplies, pattern measurement chart, cutting layout, illustrated assembly steps, and sewing glossary.

YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT READING A SEWING PATTERN

How to read a sewing pattern for beginners?

To read a sewing pattern, you must first locate the name and number of each piece, the grainline arrow to align with the fabric selvage, and the notches that indicate how to assemble the pieces together. The instructions then detail each step.

What is the grain line on a sewing pattern?

The grain line corresponds to the direction of the warp threads of a fabric. It is always parallel to the selvage when it is present. On a sewing pattern, an arrow printed on a pattern piece indicates the direction in which to place it on the fabric, according to the grain line. It must always be parallel to the selvage, so that the garment does not become distorted after washing.

What are notches used for on a sewing pattern?

Notches (or registration marks) are small cuts along the edge of a fabric piece that indicate where two pieces should meet at the seam, allowing the garment to be assembled without error.

How are Atelier Brunette patterns presented?

Atelier Brunette patterns are sold in either printed booklet or bilingual French/English PDF format, in A4 and A0 sizes, with all sizes included in a single file via a layer system, seam allowances included, and a sewing level indicated from 1/5 to 5/5.

Where can I find the cutting layout for an Atelier Brunette pattern?

The cutting layout is provided in the instruction booklet included with every Atelier Brunette pattern, alongside the necessary supplies and assembly steps.

A pattern that seemed indecipherable becomes, once you have finished reading this blog, your best sewing ally. It's up to you to choose yours !
